everywhere. >> reporter: and probably always will be. in washington, beth parker, fox 5 news. the news keeps on coming tonight. coming up in just a few minutes, brian bolter will kick off the news edge at 11:00. hats, scarves and winter coats. that's the only way to stay warm in the frigid cold. if you don't have to go outside tonight, consider yourself lucky. we're getting rocked by another round of bitter cold temperatures. tonight it's getting down into the teens. won't get much warmer all weekend long. gary mcgrady in the weather center to start us off tonight. >> reporter: thanks, brian. turn the cold stuff off. unfortunately it's going to take several days before we can do that. yesterday morning just to give you an idea what kind of cold snap this is, it's a record setting cold snap. it was over 70 record setting temperatures out there. this morning we had snow flying as far south as florida. so this cold air going all the way down into the deep south. let me show you our windchill

values. this is what it feels like when you get out there. 12 degrees here in the city. single digits still for gaithersburg right now. 9 degrees how it feels for baltimore. dulles at 11:00 and out towards the bay, annapolis feels like 14 degrees. cold and breezy overnight tonight. temperatures will be allowed to get downing into the lower 20s. mid- to upper teens. if the breeze isn't between 5 and 10, it may get a little bit lower than that out there overnight tonight. once the wind settles down, that's really when temperatures can start to fall. weekend cold blast, it will be very cold, even with complete sunshine all weekend. we'll show you exactly how cold and maybe when we're going to get a little bit of a warm-up. brian? >> thank you, gary. a family just trying to stay warm in their home and then fire broke out. investigators think a space heater may have sparked this fire in montgomery county. two women were taken to the hospital for burns. a firefighter was also hurt. making matters even worse there weren't any hydrants in the area.

you can see the house is a total loss. another big story tonight at 11:00, this one courtside at the wizards game. tonight the team played for the first time since losing star gilbert arenas. before tipoff an apology no one saw coming. fox 5's lindsay murphy here with that. >> wizards fans should feel proud tonight because team captain antawn jamison addressed issues that needed to be addressed. namely, the team laughing at gilbert arenas making guns with his fingers and pointing them at his teammates before the team played in philly earlier this week. it was an emotional few moments for one of the classiest players on the team. here is antawn jamison prior to tonight's tipoff with the orlando magic. >> there was a picture of us taking events very lightly. this is a serious situation. it's something we take to heart. we never made light of the situation and we're going to do everything in our power as long as i'm your captain, as long as these guys right here are my teammates to make this one of

the most respectable organizations in the league. >> that was the right move. an nba official has said the wizards are planning to fine some of the players for laughing at arenas' antics. new tonight, a phoney inspector caught in the act. take a look at the video. police are looking for the guy in the blue shirt here. he may look legit but cops say he's a total fake. he hit half a dozen establishments, his latest just yesterday. roz plaitser in the newsroom with those -- plater in the newsroom with those details. >> reporter: sentially he acts the part. they released pretty good pictures of him. they think somebody out there knows exactly who he is. take a good look at the surveillance tape. montgomery county police are hoping you can lead them to this man who's been passing himself off as a county inspector for months now. trouble is, cops say, he's a

ripoff artist. >> he carries himself in such a manner that it looks like he knows would he's doing. so he's been granted unaccompanied access throughout the businesses. >> reporter: investigators say back on august 20, he struck this convenience store on norfolk avenue. this time posing as a fire inspector. >> the guy dressed up like a professional. he inspected the fire alarm here. he didn't get suspicious or anything so he let the guy go in. >> reporter: the fake inspector spent time in the store's back room and promised to return with a new fire extinguisher but when he didn't show up, the wkers got worried. >> the girl who works here said i have to check my back. she run inside to check out back and they found out that her wallet had been stolen and her money in there, you know, with the green card and everything. >> reporter: police say that same day he hit this dry cleaners on rockville pike posing as a building inspector and walked out the back door

with four laptop computers. then just yesterday he walked into a doctor's office in this building on wisconsin avenue posing as a fire inspector checking out the sprinkler system. instead police say he stole cash and checkbooks. his spree has left his victims on edge. police are asking business owntories make sure an inspector is wearing a proper uniform and carrying a legitimate i.d. police say the same suspect is believed to be behind three other similar crimes in d.c. and fairfax county. investigators in all three of those areas are working together on this case. >> roz plater tonight. a convicted murderer turned mentor sentenced for sexually assaulting a d.c. student. it's six years in prison for barry harrison. the former counselor with peaceaholics worked with teens in northeast. the attack happened inside the school. harrison was fired -- rather hired by the piece holics despite serving 20 years for murder. the group says a background

che didn't reveal that. one metro employee fired, another suspended after a train nearly hit a team of inspectors. laura evans tonight everywhere at 11:00. >> the employee fired was the one driving that train last month. the prr is suspended for a week without -- the supervisor is suspended for a week without pay. it happened in alexandria just days after metro lifted a six- month ban on inspectors accessing live tracks. metro officials say the train was traveling too fast. inspectors had to scramble to avoid being hit. montgomery county trying to close a huge budget gap. the county is considering cutting bus routes, jobs and $22 million from the school system budget. there would also be cuts to library and emergencservices. the current proposal saves $70 million but the gap may be as much as $600 million. tighter security at fort hood these days. plus an increased focus on mental health services, just a couple of the changes at the army post in the wake of that deadly mass shooting on november 5. fort hood has also ramped up gun registration

policy since the shooting that left 13 dead and dozens injured. the manual accused in the christmas day terror plot face add judge today for the first time. umar farouk abdulmutallab pleaded not guilty to charges of trying to detonate a bomb in his underwear aboard a flight. the hearing lasts less than five minutes. abdulmutallab answered yes when he was asked if he understood the charges. if convicted he could face life in prison. that attack failed and it's changing the future of airport security anyway. one proposal even includes a system that could essentially read minds. we'll explain how that would work coming up next. plus, local activis claim they have evidence of animal abuse at a local shelter. now the accused organization is firing back. we've got both sides of the showdown. quick check of our rundown. friday night, hang tight. we're back in a minute.

armed rob remembers finding 7-eleven awfully convenient. tied to three robbers in three hours at 7-eleven stores. the suspects entered the stores, indicated they had a gun and got off with cash each time. if you've seen them, give montgomery county police a call. a new proposal could change the future of airport security. shawn yancy now with your fox 5 top five. >> up first tonight, brian, how airport security may soon be able to read your mind. number five, they already use scanners and x-ray machines. now airlines are developing systems that could essentially read a passenger's mind. things like shifty eyes, faster heart beats, faster breathing or even a twitch could be a give away for a would-be terrorist. starbucks is cutting calories to help your waistline. the coffee giant will start selling snacks with 220 calories or less.

free cell phone calls. sounds too good to be true. the company behind the magic jack rolled out a new version of the device. this one allows free calls from cell phones when you're at home. the gadget uses the same radio frequencies cell carriers have paid for but without their permission. that's not expected to go over well with cell phone companies. the new magic jack will go on sale for a few months for $40. up next gary has your weekend forecast. plus, accusations of animal abuse at a local shelter. tonight the humane society is fighting back here in washington. but first, the president's time as a pitch man is about to end. clothing cowart proof vowing to pressure from -- bowing to pressure from the white house. they put up a billboard of president obama wearing one of their jackets. they didn't get permission and the white house was not happy. they have been ordered to take it down. but they'll get a few more weeks of publicity. it doesn't have to be down till

accusations against the d.c. animal shelter peta. they say the staff is untrained, itself animals poorly treated annual the conditions deplorable. tonight the shelter run by the washington humane society is fighting back. roby chavez has itself news edge. >> i suspect some of the things that their edoing violate the -- they're doing violate the d.c. code. >> reporter: it's a stinging criticism from peta, the complaints alleged in inhumane conditions at the d.c. animal

shelter run by the washington humane society. peta says their own investigation shows animals living if urine, diseased and unsanitary conditions. >> the staff is untrained. they are rude to the public and they're unresponsive to calls. >> they care so much about these animals. they're very hurt and upset by this and i feel an obligation to defend them because this is not the washington humane society. >> reporter: we wanted to give you an independent look inside the washington animal shelter but the city and the department of health refused to allow our cameras inside. as aget to look firsthand. lisa is the director of the washington humane society and says it's only a snap shot that doesn't tell the full story of care. fox 5 obtained these health department memos where inspectors cite a list of unsanitary conditions as late as last july calling it dirty

and cluttered, extreme overcrowding, transmission of disease and offensive smells. peta says the complaints go back to years and says an inspector from the health department who wrote the report has been banned from the shelter. the health department has oversight over the d.c. shelter. >> absoluly not. we haven't banned anybody. we consider these really malicious and unverified allegations. >> reporter: furthermore, peta says some of the acts are illegal. its own research of health department documents show alleged acts of animal cruelty like when a doctor euthanized an animal with a needle through his heart. >> in the district of columbia like many areas, it is illegal to cause unnecessary suffering. so this causes until necessary suffering. >> that was not true. there were one or two occasions where that method of euthanasia was used on an animal that had been sedated and was unconscious. that is an acceptable means of euthanasia. >> it's a urine covered pan with a piece of cloth. >> reporter: peta says other memos and pictures of its own points to piles of feces and

bad smells. citizens have also complained to peta. the animal rights group is so disturbed it's taking on the humane society and the city health department. >> it pains me to have to criticize the humane society. i don't want to do that and i don't want people to put their animals out on the street rather than go to the shelter. what i want is the shelter to be something we can be proud of. >> we are upholding the contract. we're working with the city and doing the best for the people, the animals and the city. >> reporter: the health department did not respond to the specific allegations found by its inspectors except to say it's committed to providing good care to animals. the washington humane society says it fired one employee cited for neglect in those inspexes. robb -- inspections. roby chavez, fox 5 news. the old johnny carson you think it's cold here, the storm force taking it to north dakota. you're looking at one of the coldest spots in the country. the temperature negative 30

degrees in bismarck and that's before you factor in the windchill. the thing about cold, it doesn't translate. think about -- i remember in illinois people would have to put pieces of cardboard in the grill so their engine block wouldn't freeze. >> you saw the cars plugged in there. you can at least see those cords in there. i think at 30 below you can take boiling water, throw it in the air and it crystallizes and it becomes snow. i was at 10 below one time and said i've got to get out of here and moved back down to the south where it's not 10 below. it's nice out tonight. it's just ver, very cold. the windchill factor is down in the teens. check the numbers at the three major airports here. 23 for reagan national. dues 23. bwi is down to ten. around the region here, really it's -- the wind is blowing 10 to 15. it's keeping these temperatures up just a little bit, even though we have mostly clear skies. it's 19 for gaithersburg. quantico is 24 degrees but there is enough windchill factor to keep the feels like temperature down in the single digits in the lower teens.

that's pretty much where it's going to be all night tonight. and we will struggle it feel like it's in the 20s with the windchill factor tomorrow. that's with complete sunshine. a little snow here and there. there is a disturbance swinging through illinois right now andeanian. that is going -- and indiana. that is going to come around and bring our mountains to the west a little more snow. three to five more inches but there's really no major storm systems across the u.s. there is another storm system coming out west but through the nation's midsection it's really cold. it's almost too cold to have big storm systems right now because they like to form where it's warm and cold and form in the contrast. we don't have a big contrast tonight. minus 24 for international falls. minus 15 for fargo. it's even chilly in tampa tonight. they're down to 43 degrees. they're thinking that there's a possibility, lieve it or not, that they could have a little bit of snow flake activity down around orlando tomorrow as this cold air pushes down.

so very, very cold for everybody. weekend cold blast is settling on in. it's coming straight out of canada. this is arctic air to be sure. and temperatures this weekend are really going to struggle. now, with the high pressure we're going to have a lot of sunshine, okay, but temperatures are going to stay only in the upper 20s and the lower 30s pretty much everywhere across the weekend. but again lotsof sunshine. so that will at least make you think it's nice and warm out there. temperature on saturday and sunday 31 degrees. windchill values tomorrow will be in the teens. back in the teens overnight tonight. just a few clouds. 19 here in the city. 31 for a high tomorrow but again the wind chill values tomorrow will only be in the teens and the 20s. a little bit better on sunday. not quite as breezy there. look, we warm up a little bit. monday night there's a chance of a snow flake out to the west. 40 and 43 on tuesday and wednesday. stay warm this weekend. that does it for your forecast. stay with us. the edge will continue. lindsay comes back in with all

haywood doesn't box out. lewis takes advantage and the magic build a ten-point lead. but the wiz rally. the wizards gets the lead for good. over the magic 104-97 ending a five-game home losing streak to orlando. >> they recognized hard work and that's what we did tonight. we played with a lot of passion, a lot of aggressiveness and it felt good to have the fans have our backs, have the fans support us. they made a difference us for. >> it shows that the people haven't given up on the team. it shows that the team hasn't given up on themselves. i think that's -- you know, that's important right now. >> newly hired redskins coach mike shanahan is in denver today. he has given the current grou the weekend off. interviews are expected to begin again monday morning.

it's one and down for jim mora who after a 5-11 season is jobless. the first coach in team history to be let go after just one season. rumored for his replacement usc head coach pete carol who reportedly met with the organization earlier this week. the two sides are close to a five-year deal worth $7 million a year that would make carol both president and head coach. the n.f.l. playoffs begin tomorrow and the jets are in the post-season for the first time in four years. their head coach rex ryan is supplying bulletin board material for the cincinnati bengals. >> i think we have the best defense. i know we do. i know we have the best rushing attack. that's why i think those are two huge factors in our favor. i want this football team, you know -- i'm not going to trade our team. if i had a choice to coach any team in this tournament, i would choose this one. >> a very confident rex ryan sunday right here on fox 5 the
